Thursday night. Approximately
$300 was raised for School Cafe
teria equipment and between 500
and 700 people had a lot of fun
at no expense to them except when
they bought food to eat. The Ways
and Means Committee and all the
committee members and friends
worked like Trojans, and that
kind of cooperation always pays
dividends. Friends from Landrum
and^yarious parts of Polk County

year that a large crowd has turned
out for a street entertainment.
The dance last fall was so success
ful that many of the young people
wanted more of them . . . The

nant. The World Series start to
day between the Giants and the
Yankees. Oak Hall hotel invites
any who wish to see the games over

The dry forces todav noon filed
a protest on the ABC election
on the grounds that Mrs. B. E.
Samples, registrar, was not sworn
in at beginning of registration.

FIRE WEDNESDAY
A spark from a shoe nail which
ignited, is reported to have caused
a fire in the wash room of the
Sinclair Service Station Wednes
day noon. The loose gasoline and
grease on the floor of the 'room
immediately caught on fire and
the flames went up the inside of
the building which was all con
crete. No serious damage was
done. The Tryon Volunteer Fire
Department arrived in time to put
the fire out in a few minutes.
Rotary Has ‘‘Fair Exchange”
A motion picture produced by
the New York Stock Exchange will
be presented at the Tryon Rotary
Club Friday noon at Oak Hall
Hotel after the 1 o’clock luncheon.
The program will be in charge of
John G. Landrum Jr., and Albert
B. Guilbert of Merrill, Lynch,
Pierce, Fenner and Bearu of Ashe
ville will present the movie.
Hickory Nut Gorge News
The Hickory Nut Gorge Civic
Association will holds its annual
fish fry and square dance Friday
night at. the Chimney Rock Camp
for boys. Starting at 6:30 p. m.,
the food will be served and at
8:30 p. m., dancing will get under
way.
In a drive for improvements to
Lake Lure Golf Course, Mayor
L. M. Pearson stated that the golf
course is an asset to Hickory Nut
Gorge, a form of recreation not
only for the visitors but year
around pleasure to all the people
in the Gorge. “Neither age nor
sex is a barrier to playing golf,
young or old can enjoy this out
door sport.”
