Joel Derby, senior from Tryon, and Evelyn Joyce Parker, sophomore from Mill Sirring, made the honor roll at Appalachian State Teachers Col lege at Boone. And John Ball (Jock) Blois of Tuxedo, made the honor roll at Ohio State with an A or better average . . . To day’s Asheville Citizen had a picture of Vance McCown receiv Continued on Back Page_ TRYON TAX RATE CUT The tax rate of the Town of Tryon has been reduced from $2.25 to $2, by order of the Town Commissioners. Mayor C. D. Stevens stated Tuesday that Com missioners E. L. Tollison, R. B. Scruggs and Ernest Kerhulas studied the financial report submit ted by Town Manager C. 0. Smith and unanimously voted to re-'uce the tax rate for this year. Mr. Stevens said that through the efficiency of Manager Smith in making collections due the town and in keeping the administration on a business like basis this re duction was made possible. In the meantime many streets have been hardsurfaced, water and sewer lines extended, new foundations laid for several streets to be paved this summer, and a general im provement in the police depart ment. garbage collection and street cleaning. The commissioners have express ed appreciation of the coopera tion given by the public in help ing to make the community a cleaner and better place in which to live, and that they can only go as far as the people wish and the budget will permit. TED FOX WINS In the pro-amateur tournament at the Asheville Country Club course, Pro Ted Fox of Tryon teamed with amateurs Roy Hyatt, Charles Wallace and Bob Pressley Jr., to take first place, according -to the Asheville Citizen. They came in with 17 and one-half points above their 36 points quota. Points were calculated as one point for par, two points for a a birdie, three points for an eagle and one-fourth point for a bogie.
