His interest in the educational progress of the state and his capacity for getting things done and ironing out differences between school leaders throughout the state won the admiration of all; and he successfully elected after his 'appointment by the governor, to serve**18 years. He was formerly superintendent of Ruth erford County schools where he made such a good record he was called to the state post. His state iTtf'k received national recognition he was chosen from time to time to represent the nation in an advisory capacity . . . The DEMONcratic convention seems to be underway in Chicago. Now the Republicans can laugh. Many local people stayed at their radios and television sets long after midnight as the fight over double talk went on. The same breaths that talk ed about rights of the individual were trying to bind others to their way of thinking, or else! . . . Mrs. Clvde Lancaster at Columbus, Ga., reports 30 near rainless days and temperatures that go sometimes to 104 . . . Earthquake in Teha chapi, Calif., kills 11 and wrecks many homes. ADRIAN PATTON Adrian Ivan Patton, <77, of Sa luda and Waco, Tex., died about 1 a. m., Monday at his home of a heart attack. The body will be sent to Houston, Texas, for funeral services and burial in Forest Park Cemetery. Patton was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Jessie Llewellvn Patton of Clinto, Ind. He had bee a summer resident of Saluda since 1915. He was a mem ber of the Methodist Church in Waco, a 32nd degree Mason and a representative of B.
