Daniel Boone, A Great Man
Wilbur Roadhouse was in charge
of the Rotary program Friday and
presented Rev. Wayne Williams,
retired army chaplain, historjan,
lecturer and president of the
North Carolina Wildlife Associa
tion as his guest sneaker.
As a representative of the
“Thunderland” play at Asheville,
Rev. Williams gave an outline of
the life and achievements of Dan
iel Boone, who he linked with
Abraham Lincoln and Robert E.
Lee as the great men in America
from the standpoint of cnaracter
and ability.
Boone, a native of Pennsylvania,
came to Nortn Carolina with his
father when 15 years old. Married
Rebecca Bryan at 24; was a wag
oner in Braddock’s army in French
Indian war; killed a b’ar in Ten
nessee in 1760; in Florida in
1765; explored Kentucky, and in
1771 with five neighbors went to
Kentucky river. Boone only sur
vived. Returned in 1773 on a
settling expendition backed bv
Henderson who bought three
fourths of Kentucky from the In
dians in 1775 for $50,000. Boones
boro was built and beseiged by
Indians. Boone captured by Shaw
nee Indians at Salt Lick and taken
to Chillicothe, Ohio, and adopted.
He escaped, travelling on foot 165
miles, with only one meal, to help
save the Fort. Later settlers,
crooked lawyers, land sharks, etc.,
froze him out ot his own property.
Broken hearted he moved to Mis
souri where the Spanish governor
welcomed him and gave him a free
tract of land. He continued to ex
plore the far west until 85 when
he died.
