Shields Flynn Awarded
Eagle Scout Rank
Shields Flynn, 14 year old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Broadus B. Flynn
of Tryon was advanced to the
Eagle Scout rank Monday night
at the Polk County Boy Scout
Court of Honor. The advancement
had the approval of the Piedmont
Council and of the national head
quarters in Mew York.
According to custom Piedmont
Council' Scout Executive R. M.
Schiele of Gastonia gave the Eagle
badge to the Scout’s mother, who
pinned it on her son. Then the
Scout was given a miniature badge
to pin on his mother. The father
was recognized for the part he
has played in the advancement of
the Scout and of Scouting in Gen
eral. Scoutmaster Seth Vining Jr.,
who took over the job after the
Scout had started under Scoutmas
ter C. W. McCall, presented Eagle
Scout Flynn with his credentials
from national headquarters. Scout
Executive R. M. Schiele congra
tulated the parents and the Scout
on the many achievements neces
sary to become an Eagle. Mr.
Flynn, the father, thanked all who
have had a part in helping his
two sons to become Eagle Scouts.
The other is Ligon Flynn, a stu
dent of architecture at N. C. State
College.
Ted Newhall. son of Mr. and
Mrs. George Newhall. who was
also advanced to the Eagle rank,
will receive -his award at a public
meeting during the holidays. He
is a member of Trooo 3 of the
Tryon First Baptist Church.
