Tryon Woman Is Winner
In Bridge Event
Pinehurst, N. C., Jan. 18—Mrs.
W. S.. Johnston of Greenville,
S. C., and Mrs. Baxter Haynes of
Tryon are the new bridge cham
pions of the southeast alter their
triumph over a record field of 304
players in the annual Mid-Southern
Bridge Championship held here.
Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Haynes,
newcomers in the event, led all the
way through the two-day tourna
ment which ended late last night.
It was the first time in the history
of the event that any one pair led
all the way through the qualifying
sessions and championship playoff
finals.
The tournament drew entries
from nine states and the District
of Columbia and was directed by
Mrs. Ann Baker Fenner of Tar
boro.
Mrs. Stanislas Czetwertynski
(Betty Sturgis) of Tryon won sec
ond in consolation.
ROGER NORRIS
Landrum—Roger Lee Norris,
two-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs.
J. C. Norris of Landrum, Route 2,
died at 3:30 p. m. Saturday at the
home following a brief illness.
Besides the parents he is sur
vived by paternal grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Comer Norris of near
Greer and maternal grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Pace of
Landrum Route 2.
Funeral services will be conduct
ed Monday at 2 p. m. at Gowans
viile Baptist Church by the Revs.
Fay Landford and Eugene Camp
bell. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Petty Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements.
