The Dessert-Birthday party at the Congregational Church House Wednesday night raised over $411 for the church building fund. The August table won the prize for having the most guests born in August. TONIGHT is the night for the Riding & Hunt Club pro gram at Oak Hall where movies will be shown of riding events taken in Tryon; Gordon Wright will give a talk, and light re iresnments will be served. Any one interested is invited . . . The Embury basketball teams will play two Asheville teams tonight at Tryon gymnasium. 4-H Recreation at Columbus gym at 7:30. FRI DAY brings the duplicate bridge tournament at Oak Hall; a colored 'basketball game at Tryon gym; the County Basketball tournament playoff in Columbus at Stearns gym. Tryon Men’s Garden Club at Oak Hall at 6:30; Marshall funer -Continued on Back Page_ Red Cross Campaign Dinner Over 60 Red Cross workers turn ed out for the “kickoff’’ dinner at Oak Hall Wednesday night, open ing the 1953 Fund Raising Cam paign. Some of the solicitors from the county drove many miles to be present. The Rev. H. A. Pruyn of the Tryon Methodist Church invoked a blessing on the organization, the workers, and the present campaign. Col. Norme D. Frost, co-chairman with Mrs. Frost of the campaign, introduced the two guest speakers. Brent Yount, field representative of the WNC area, explained the new Gamma Globulin project, which is adding $7,000,000 to the National Fund Goal for the pur pose of fighting polio - induced paralysis in the nation’s children. Paul Ostborg, field director from Donelson Air Force Base, told of the many ways in which the Red Cross serves men in the Armed Forces, both here and overseas, and their dependents. An amusing skit, showing the frustrating experiences of a can vasser, was put on by Mrs. Ben White, Mrs. Paul Culberson, Mrs. Paul C. Smith, Mrs. Jack Craig, Mrs. Ralph Sullivan and Robert Michael. A short movie, “Your Red Cross” closed the program. Red Cross Canvassers Those canvassers for the city of Tryon who were not present at the dinner are asked to pick up their envelopes of supplies at the Chamber of Commerce office, back of Western Union, as soon as possible. St. Lpkes’ Hospital has receiv ed a contribution to its Memorial Fund in memory of Horace Daw son.
