the Columbia State about the Rev.
Archie Ellis accepting the position
of pastor of the First Baptist
Church at Columbia, shows that
Dr. Ellis will receive a salary of
$12,000 per year. The church is
the largest in Columbia and one
of the largest in the Southeast. It
hag a membership of 3,400 and a
budget of $234,000. Furman Uni
versity has announced that it will
confer the degree of Doctor of
Divinity on the new pastor at the
spring commencement. He is at
present president of the North
Carolina Baptist State Convention.
He has been pastor at Salisbury
for nine years during which time
he led in the building of a new
church auditorium and educational
buildings which cost $600,000. The
membership grew from 1,040 to
1,800. He had received 1,400 new
members over 600 of them by
baptism.
