St. Matthew Passion, a new
kind of art film, will be brought
to Tryon by the Lanier Club next
week, Thursday, March 26th, at 8
p. m., in the Congregational au
ditorium.
The greatest masterpieces in art
history “act” in. this picture to
the music of Bach. It was filmed
in the museums and cathedrals of
Europe, and portrays the passion
of Christ.
Art and music have been welded
mto an organic unity, a film-music
drama, that is as new as it is
overwhelming.
Virgil Thompson of the New
York Tribune says of the picture:
“It was, to this listener, extremely
impressive as a musical film. A
recitative of such heart-rending
character is unique to this work;
it is as high above speech in its
expressive beauty as the work of
the great painters is above what
actors could have done with a
pantomime of that plot.”—Contrib.
