CHESTNUTS
In Texas they are experiment
ing with blight-resistant Chinese
chestnuts in the Davy Crockett
National Park. The forester out
there says this is the first experi
ment in Texas and he believes the
first in the United States.
This may be the first extensive
planting, but by friend L. B. Gib
son of Fairmont and Saluda, N.
C., planted blight-resistant Chinese
chestnuts on the ridge back of the
“Gibson Orchard” some years ago.
When I last checked on what
happened, they were living1, I was
told, but not very promising. It
will be rather interesting to know
how they are doing. Standing all
about them are dead chestnut trees.
Much of the dead chestnut in
the mountains has been taken out
of areas in which saw mills have
operated. “Wormy Chestnut” is
high priced timber.
When the lodge on Hogback
Mountain was built great chestnut
trees stood about it. They have
perhaps passed.—C. 0. Hearon in
