Charleston Gardens Blooming
Charleston, S. C., March 18.—
It looks like an early season for
Azaleas at Charleston’s Famous
Gardens.
Owners of Middleton, Magnolia
and Cypress Gardens predict that
the period of March 10th to 30th
will see the flamboyant flowers at
their finest. One of the warmest
winters on record is responsible
for bringing the blooms to maturi
ty at this early stage. Rains of
the last two weeks have swelled
the buds to the bursting point.
Early Azaleas are already bloom
ing in the three gardens. Mingled
with them are spring flowers and
late blooming Camellias. The gard
ens are filled with a myriad of
dainty spring colors: the Red Bud
in full bloom, the gold of the
Carolina Jessamine and Forsythia,
the snow-white of the Spirea, the
pink of the Crab Apple, and the
delicate greenery of new leaves.
White and lavender Wisteria are
in heavy bud. Spectacular Camel
lias, the finest and most abundant
in memory, still bloom proudly
amncg the later flowers,
Magnolia Garden is for
its flowers—individual and en
masse; Middleton for its land
scaped terraces; and Cypress for
its dark mirror-like lagoon. All
three are known for their Camel
lias and Azaleas and early spring
flowers.
For the next few weeks the
gardens will be visited by thou
sands of flower lovers, tourists and
school children. Early spring is
always a favorite visiting time,
for the spectacular colors of the
Azaleas from Writable walls of
color, enhanced by background of
great oaks, reflecting pools and
soft spring weather.
Indications point to a sellout
crowd for the Fred Waring Show
Monday night at the Spartanburg
Auditorium.
Cecil B. De Mille’s “Greatest
Show On Earth” was awarded the
best picture of the year Thursday
night in Hollywood.
