S u n d a y’s Asheville Citizen Times had a letter to the editor article from Frederick Rutledge of Asheville, in which he told about “Dark Corner” a region in north western part of South Carolina. Be said in 1870 it was thickly timbered with oak, poplar, maple, spruce pine, mountain laurel, dog wood and evergreens. It was the home of moonshiners. The bays and terrains gave coverage for the moonshiners and at the same time permitted them to see the approach of officers or any strang er. Mr. Rutledge said the people in Dark Corner were very hos pitable to their friends and were afraid of no man. They made the best soldiers. He never heard of one being a jail bird or a drunk ard. They made moonshine liquor because they believed they had a right to and would shoot anyone who interfered with their business.
