Mr. and Mrs. William Hazlett
Upson and daughter, Miss Polly
Wright Upson, who have been on
a tour of South America have
been the guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Paul C. Smith in Gillette Woods
the past few days. Miss Upson
left Thursday for their home in
Middlebury, Vermont. Mr. and Mrs.
Upson will remain until Saturday.
Mr. Upson is the noted writer
of the Earthworm Tractor stories
that have appeared in the Satur
day Evening Post since 1924. His
character, Alexander Eotts, has
become quite famous to millions of
readers. The stories became so fa
mous that a movie was made in
1936 based on them; starring Joe
E. Brown as Botts.
Mr. Upson was with the Cater
pillar Tractor Co., of Peoria, 111.,
for several years and Mr. Smith
who is now the southeastern repre
sentative of the company has been
with them for nearly 25 years, and
was on the advisory staff that di
rected the production of the Earth
worm Tractor motion picture.
Mr. Upson is a graduate of Cor
nell, a veteran of World War I
and the author of a number of
books.
