Tryon welcomes today the expert
bridge players of this area for a
three day tournament {'riday,
Saturday and Sunday at Oak Hall
hotel. George D. Cooksey of the
hotel reports reservations made
for players from Atlanta, Ga.,
Columbia, Spartanburg and Green
ville, S. C., Charlotte, Greens
boro and Asheville, N. C. There
will be many others. The beautiful
silver trophies are on display at
the Betty Sturgis Shop. The top
award, the Oak Hall hotel trophy,
was won last year by Mr. and Mrs. I
Prn O. Johnson of Spartanburg, j
Mr. Johnson is president of the
American Contract Bridge League. I
it must be won three times bv the
same persons to be retained. There
are 12 other silver trophies. A
special bridge edition of The Tryon
Daily Bulletin was mailed out as
invitations two weeks ago to play
ers in the Carolinas and Georgia.
In this edition welcome ads were
printed for the Tack Shoo, Pine
Crest Inn, Buckingham Inn, Tov
House, Blue Ridge Weavers. Oak

Green Creek Elects Officers
At the annual meeting of the
Green Creek P.-T. A. Thursday,
William Earl Barnette was elect
ed president; Jack Peagan, vice
president; Bennette E. Hinsdale,
secretary and treasurer.
Principal Glen J. Bemisderfer
and the home economics teacher
were appointed to name the neces
sary committees.
The P.-T. A. report showed a
surplus of $500 and it was voted
to use it as a down payment on
the purchase of an $1,800 two-way
intercommunication system which
would serve 30 stations and pro
vide for AM and FM radio pro
grams and a three speed phono
graph record changer. Mr. Bemis
derfer stated that the teachers,
children and parents would be
greatly benefitted by this service.

Family Day at Mill Spring1
Sunday, May 10th, will be Fam
ily Day at the Bill Spring Baptist
Church. All families will be recog
nized, especially mother. The Burns
Quartet of Tryon will be present.
The Rev. A. C. Martin’s topic will
be "The Old Fashion Mother.”
Mile High Swinging Bridge
The Mile-High Swinging Bridge,
completed in autumn of 1952, con
nects two peaks of Grandfather
Mountain, which towers to an ele
vation of 5,939 feet near the Blue
Ridge Parkway in Western North
Carolina. The bridge is accessible
via a new privately owned toll road
connecting with Highway 221.
