morning to learn of the death of
Senator Willis Smith in the Naval
Hospital at Bethesda, Md. He was
recognized as one of the outstand
ing civic and political leaders and
had represented the U. S. on im
portant missions abroad . . . Some

SENATOR SMITH IS DEAD
Senator Willis Smith
Radio reports this morning an
nounced the death of Senator
Willis Smith of North Carolina at
the Naval Hospital at Bethesda,
Ma., where he was taken following
a heart attack Tuesday.
The North Carolina junior sena
tor was fast making a name for
himself in affairs of state. He won
many new supporters at the Demo
cratic National Convention last
June.
Senator Smith, a native of Nor-^
folk, Va., had spent most of his
life in North Carolina and was
an outstanding civic and business
leader. He was graduated from
Duke University; had served as
speaker of the N. C. House; presi
dent American Bar Association,
state, district and county associa
