Hiking in the mountains around here should become popular again .... Mayor C. D. Stevens states that the Town Commissioners have named Lewis Clary, 45, of Gaffney, S. C., to serve on the Tryon police ; force. Mr. Clary has had 13 years 1 of public service, eight of them i on the Gaffney police force. A check on his record was very com- i mendable. He was also a member of the Gaffney Fire Dept. . . . The Town Commissioners also accepted the low bid for construction of a water main from Five Points in Gillette Woods to Highway 176 near the Hospital Road. Mid-State Construction Co., got the job. Town Manager C. O. Smith says the town’s water supply is now doubled since the new source has been tanped and sent into the new reservoir. The tax rate has been reduced to $1.75 per hundred, the lowest in manv years . . . Former Polk Countv Acent John W. Jimmy Griffin will be in charge of the program. The druggist will speak on the im portance of salesmanship. Pat Griffith Wins 7th Title Mrs. Walter T. Lyons, nee Pat Griffith of Rye, N. Y., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Griffith of Tryon R-l, won the Rye, N. Y., Women’s Tennis Championship Saturday for the 7th time. There were 64 women competing for the championship and Mrs. Lyons de feated six of them in reaching the final bracket. HINES RELIEVED OF PRISON CAMP POSITION Walter D. Hines, steward of Polk County Prison Camp No. 909, has been released indefinitely by the btate Department ot Prisons. This shakeup in the Polk Coun tv prison system was made on Thursday, according’ to official sources. Walter P. Anderson of Raleigh is director of the State Prison System. B. H. Freeman of Brevard. N. C., is the super visor of this district. The release from! the State Department of Highway and Public Works Sys tem was made through Mr. Free man. who serves this district. Amos D.
