The annual picnic given by St.
Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary to the
hospital staff and trustees will be
held today at 6 p. m. at Harmon
Field. All friends of the hospital
and their families are invited to
participate and bring box lunches
sufficient for the number in each
family. Dessert and beverages will
be furnished at the Field by the
Auxiliary. An opportunity to get
together for fellowship and appre
cation of those who do so nvuch
for the hospital throughout the
year . . . Mrs. George Vosburgh
Jr. has gone to River Forest, 111.
to visit her mother, Mrs. Stowell

Landrum Cannery has announced
that the cannery will be open on
Thursdays only from 8 a. m. to
1 p. m.
HUMOR AT KIWANIS
J. Lee Lavender had charge of
the Tryon Kiwanis Club program
Tuesday at 1 p. m. at Oak Hall
hotel and had as guest speaker,
Earl Penney of Hendersonville.
Mr. Penney kept the members and
guests in ripples of laughter as
he told Negro stories that brought
out the humor, tolerance and un
derstanding of a kindly people
who helped make the South fa
mous.
Mr. Penney, a business man of
Hendersonville, was brought up
in the South and spoke of the love
all Southerners have for the
Negro.
Guests at the meeting included
Kiwanis Lt.-Gov. Sig Westmore
land of Marion, Ernest Burwell of
Spartanburg, the Rev. W. S.
Stoney of Anniston, Ala., and Sa
luda; Bob Ingalls and Pat John
son of Miami, Fla.
HOSPITAL NEWS
Patients admitted to St. Luke’s
Hospital include Wade Morgan,
Franklin; Miss Virtell Williams,
Mill Spring; and A. B. Whitmire,
Trvon. There were no discharges.
Mr. and Mrs. George Kirkland
of Landrum are the parents of a
girl born August 11th at 9:30
n. m.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kell and son,
Tommy, and Mrs. Jack Gaze have
returned from Myrtle Beach.
