Miss Ersell, a year old carrier
pigeon, named for Mrs. Ersell
Turner of the Red. Bird Asso
ciates, made a flying trip recent
ly with a letter from J. P. Horne
of Tryon Route 1 to his son, J.
R. Horne of 6805 Wellington
Avenue, Tampa, Fla.
J. R. Horne, circulation repre
sentative of the Tampa Tribune,
raises these pigeons as a hobby.
His son, Harold C. Horne, is a
professional pigeon raiser, and
has used pigeons to carry war
messages. J. R. Horne was in
the Bulletin office Wednesday and
had one of the little cylinders
that are used to hold the mes
sages when tied to the pigeon’s
leg.
When “Miss Ersell” was nearly
a year old, Mr. Horne shipped her
by express to his father on Tryon
Route One. He wanted to try
her out. The father. J. P. Horne,
who is 80 years old, wrote a
message to his son and fastened
it to the pigeon’s leg and released
her early one morning. The next
morning she arrived in Tampa,
Fla., at J. R. Horne’s pigeon roost.
Frsell had travelled the 500 miles
distance in 9 hours and 30 minutes
during the daylight time. Mr.
Horne stated a pigeon doesn’t fly
at night and stops at trees to
spend the night.
