Jonathan Wainwright, 70, died
Wednesday in Brooke Army Hos
pital, San Antonio, Texas, from
brain stroke. He was the hero
of Corregidor. Maj. General E.
P. King Jr., of Saluda, next in
command to General Wainwright,
was interviewed by the Spartan
burg Herald as soon as news of
the death was announced. General
King expressed his personal loss
of a friend with whom he served
in the Japanese war in the Philip
pines, and also were prisoners of
war for over three years. General
King described Wainwright as a
very able commander, a coura
geous and generous gentleman . . .
The trial of C. 0. Story, charged
with assault on James E. Johnson,
has been transferred to Henderson
Ccuntv October term of court as
a' result of Story's failure to ap
pear at his trial in Polk County
Wednesday. That was the last
case on the Polk County criminal
docket and Polk Superior Court
was adjourned by JuJge W. H. S.
Burgwyn until next February . . .
Tryon stores will be closed next
Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day . .

REGISTER SATURDAY
All new voters, those who have
moved into their respective pre
cincts at least four months and in
the state for one year, or who have
become 21 years of age since last
election, must register if they
! wish to vote in the coming bond
election. Registration books will
be open in all precincts from 9
a. m^ to sunset at their regular
. polling places. In Tryon it will
be the school gymnasium. Mrs.
Sara MacDonald is the registrar.
Ned Anderson of Saluda is
chairman of the County Election
Board. A list of other registrars
and registering places will be pub
lished when available.
HOSPITAL NEWS
A daughter was born Sept. 2
at 7:15 p. m. at St. Luke’s Hos
pital to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jackson
of Tryon R-l.
Mrs. J. D. Waldrop of Tryon
is a patient in the hospital and
Mrs. Nanny Taylor of Columbus
has been discharged.
Polk Calves Win Many
Ribbons At Enka
All the winners of the Polk
County 4-H Club Junior Dairy
Calf Show didn’t go to the district
show near Asheville Wednesday,
but_of the 15 calves that did go,
10 of them won blue ribbons and
five red ribbons. Three of the
calves that won red ribbons here
won blue ribbons at Asheville,
showing how keen and close the
judging is here.
