Progress In School Situation The following item taken from old record at the court house in Columbus shows something of the school situation at that time . “I, John T. Green, having a first grade teacher’s certificate, certify that I taught a free public school near Tryon City in School District No. 4, of Township Tryon in the County of Polk, from 18th day of Aug. 1879 to 15th day of Sept. 1879, in which were enrolled 25 pupils of the white race; 16 males, 9 females. The average at tendance during the term was 16. Number of teachers in said school, 1. The school committee of Polk County consisted of John Garri son. Austin Newman and'M. H.
