Local football fans enjoyed
UNC’s 17-15 win over Michigan in
the Gator Bowl. It was the same
score that Clemson defeated Ohio
State last year.
South Carolina was not as
fortunate as Missouri defeated
them 24-14 in the Hall of Fame
Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.
The Tryon Kiwanis Club meets
today at 1 p.m. at the Pacolet
River Plantation.
Mothers can smile again as the
local schools re-opened today
after the Christmas holidays.

Meets Friday
The Civic League of Landrum
will meet Friday, Jan. 4 at 3 p.m.
at the Civic Center. Officers for
1980 were elected at the
December Christmas party as
follows: Pres., Mrs. Leo Frank,
Vice-Pres., Mrs. Annabel Mc
Kinney, Sec., Mrs. Edmund
Komant, and Treas., Mrs. Joe E.
Brown, Jr. Committees for the
ensuing year will be appointed at
this meeting. Hostesses will be
the 1980 officers. Visitors will be
welcome and dues will be
accepted at this meeting.

Millwood of Rt. 11, Spartanburg,
S. C. have announced the
engagement of their daughter,
Miss Janice Diane Millwood, to
Donald Gene Theo, son of Ms.
Louise B. Theo of Landrum.
The bride-elect graduated from
Pacolet High School and from
USC at Spartanburg with a BA in
Elementary Education on De
cember 14th.
Mr. Theo graduated from
Landrum High School and
Spartanburg Tech. He is employ
ed by Southern Wood Piedmont
as a computer operator.
The wedding is planned for
February 9th at 5 p.m. at the
First Baptist Church of Pacolet,
S. C.
Jim Laughridge has returned
to Virginia Beach, Va. after
visiting Mr. and Mrs. Digit
Laughridge and son, Chris in
Tryon.
Rotarians To Hear
About Volcanoes
Rotarians gathering at the
Pacolet River Planatation at
12:45 Friday, January 4, for a
luncheon meeting will hear about
new scientific methods that have
been developed for predicting
volcanic eruptions.
The speaker will be Rotarian,
Willard Parsons, who retired to
Polk County several years ago
from the Detroit area where he
had been a Professor at Wayne
State University in the scholastic
field of geology. His retirement
has been interrupted by a year
spent in Japan as teacher and
tourist. Professor Parsons, when
in Polk County and not away on a
trip, has shared his expertise and
experience with the community
as a speaker before numerous
appreciative organizations. His
talk to Rotary will be illustrated
with color slides of erupting
volcanoes. — Reporter

Tucker and children, Austin and
Jeff, have returned to Henderson,
Texas after spending the holidays
with Mr. Tucker’s mother, Mrs.
Frances Emory and other
relatives in the area.
Mr. and Mrs. Sheilds Flynn and
children, Andrea and Joclyn,
have returned to Boston, Mass,
after visiting Mr. Flynn’s
parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. B.
