Soviet troops extend their control in Afghanistan President Carter has announced that the U. S. would halt the sale of 17 million tons of grain and sophisticated technology to Russia. The Pittsburg Steerlers defeat ed Houston Oilers 27-13 and the Los Angeles Rams downed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9-0 Sunday. Now they will meet Jan. 20th in the Super Bowl. High Speed Chase A high speed chase began Monday morning about 6 a.m. on Carpenter Drive, Landrum. Patrolman Ray Moffitt attempt ed to stop a car for failing to stop for a stop sign and no tail light, but the car wouldn’t stop and took off. The chase went to Spivey Creek Road then on Hwy. 11 to Hwy. 14. The car went on No.. 11 toward Highway 25. The vehicle turned around at Glassy Mountain Baptist Church and headed back toward Hwy. 14. He was within 3 miles of Hwy. 14 when he couldn’t make a curve and ran into a bank. The driver got out and ran. He left three hitchickers in the car. Patrolman Moffitt said that he had signed warrants against Donald Ray McDowell of Landrum charging him with failing to stop for a blue light and reckless driving. MEET TONIGHT The Task Force meeting on Juvenile Crime and Delinquency Prevention will be held tonight at 7:30 at the Conference room in the Extension Building at the courthouse annex in Columbus. Scoggins, Polk County Register of Deeds, has announc ed her candidacy for re-nomina tion in the Democratic May Primary. Mrs. Scoggins has served as Register of Deeds since 1964 and prior to that served as Deputy Register of Deeds. Mrs. Scoggins said that she had enjoyed serving all the people of Polk County to the best of her knowledge and ability. She said that during her terms she had improved the ways and methods of record keeping to assist the public in finding the records through better indexing. The records have been microfilmed since 1969. Mrs. Scoggins said that these improvements have not been at the expense of the taxpayers since the recording fees and real estate excise taxes collected in the Register of Deeds office are several thousand Continued On Back Page Man Shot Perry Hall of Columbus was shot Friday night about 10 p.m. in front of Bill Plumley’s place on Hwy. 176 in Greenville County between Tryon and Landrum. Lt. Earl Barnett, Information Offi cer of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department said that Hall was shot in the abdomen with a .45 front loading black powder derringer. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where on Monday morning he was in intensive care. His condition was reported as serious but not critical. Lt. Barnett said that Hall was reportedly shot by Charles Maynard of Hendersonville in an argument over cocaine. Maynard had been arrested and was in the Henderson County jail Monday morning.
