Most of us think that law
enforcement officers have a soft
job, that is until someone starts
shooting at them. A law
enforcement officer never knows
when he will be faced with that
prospect. Sunday afternoon two
deputies', Allen Rickman and
Steve Reid answered a routine
call, which turned into a brief gun
battle in which a fugitive from
Florida was killed.

In Shootout
With Officers
Eugene Huffman, 29, of St.
Petersburg, Fla. was killed in a
gun battle with two Polk County
Deputies Sunday afternoon in the
Green Creek Section of Polk
County.
The Sheriff’s Department had

someone camping in the woods
about a mile from the Head Clinic

Sunday.
Sheriff Boyce Carswell said
that the two deputies found
Huffman and a woman, Mrs.
Helga Wendt Schmeltau, 43, of
812 Rutledge Street, Spartan
burg in the area near a parked
car. Also found was a make-shift
shelter of canvas and roofing tin.
The deputies, using Huffman’s
driver’s license, radioed his
name to dispatchers.
When Huffman heard the police
dispatcher report that he was
wanted, Sheriff Carswell report
ed that Huffman went wild and
pulled a .22 caliber pistol. The
deputies begged the man to put
down his gun but he refused. At
this point Huffman reportedly
opened fire and the deputies
returned it. He was hit several
times and was dead on arrival at
St. Luke’s Hospital at about 2:30
p.m. The deputies were not
