American Oil Company’s re quests for natural gas and oil eases include 650 tracts in Transylvania, Clay, Graham and Cherokee counties. The price of gold soared above $700 an ounce for the first time in New York on Tuesday. Tuesday’s Charlotte Observer reported that Robert Falls of Shelby would not run for re-election to the N. C. House of Representatives. Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. is the Lamb or Chicken Dinner at St. Luke’s CME Church. Friday is the Church Women United annual meeting for Church Representatives at St. John’s Church from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. There are two travelogues coming up. Monday at 2:30 p.m. there is a free General Travelogue in the Parish Hall of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church and Thursday at 8 p.m. is the next Kiwanis Travelogue, “Canada’s Many Faces” at the Fine Arts Center. Visitors are invited to attend the enrichment sessions which Continued On Back Page Jack Bryan Is Social Service Director The Polk County Board of Social Services has announced that effective February 1st, Jack Bryan will begin as the new Director of Social Services. Mr. Bryan was born in Wilkes County, January 16, 1945. He is married to the former Pamela Brewer, and they have one son, Jason, who is three years of age. The Bryans attend the Church of Christ; he is a 3rd Degree Mason; he has been a member of the North Carolina Social Services Association for the past four years, and has served in many capacities with the Association. Mr. Bryan is a graduate of Appalachian State University, and has been with Social Services for 5^ years. He has worked with Alexander County Social Ser vices and is currently employed with Brunswick County- Department of Social Services, in Bolivia, N. C. Mr. Bryan stated that he is anxious to move back to Western North Carolina and is looking forward to serving, and working with, the people of Polk County. Arrested Michael “Fat Back” McClure turned himself in to the Polk County Sheriff’s Department Monday night. Sheriff Boyce Carswell reported that he has been charged with 7 drug related charges.and is being held under $40,000 bond. Four Homes Are Entered Four homes were entered in the Green Creek section of Polk County Monday afternoon be tween 2:30 and 5:00 o’clock. Sheriff Boyce Carswell report ed that the homes of Mrs. Alice Brackett, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Lorenzen, Rev. David Buck and Damon Logan were entered and that guns, TVs, silverware and amplifiers were taken. A com plete list of items taken were not known yet, but Sheriff Carswell estimated that the loss was around $4,000. The Sheriff said that they have a description of a truck parked at one of the houses during this time. Petitions Out There are petitions being circulated in School District One: asking for a School Board Election. There are also petitions out for the following candidates: John Austin, Arthur Wingo and Thomas Haynes Morrow, incum bents and James M. Petty and Joyce Wessinger. Three will be elected. New Pastor At Fairview Rev. Barry G. Tucker will assume his duties as pastor of Fairview Baptist Church, Lan drum, this Sunday, Jan. 20. He and his wife will be honored on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. with a drop-in reception at the church. All church members and visitors are invited to attend. Time To Order Berry Plants!! The Polk County Agricultural Extension Service is now taking orders for their annual straw berry, muscadine grape and blueberry plant sale. Anyone interested in ordering plants should contact the Agricultural Extension Service at 894-8218. Singing Saturday There will be singing Saturday beginning at 7:15 p.m. at the Tryon Church of God. Singers present will include the Ashe Family of Pickens, S. C. and the Pisgah Forest Trio. Rev. Donald Littleton, pastor, said that everyone was invited. Storyhour Mrs. Chris Fitch will continue the series of Mr. Man books today at the 4 o’clock Storyhour, by adding Mr. Bounce and Mrs. Chatterbox. To find out how Mr. Bounce controls his bouncing and Mr. Chatterbox controls his chattering, boys and girls will need to attend.
