To Be Honored
Raleigh — Lewis R. Holding,
Chairman of the North Carolina
Public Service Award 'Society’s
Banquet, announced today that
the 1980 recipient of the Society’s
Award will be United States
Senator Jesse A. Helms. Pro
ceeds from the event benefit the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Senator Helms will be the
eighth person to receive the
North Carolina Public Service
Award. The first recipient was
former Governor Robert W.
Scott, followed by the late
Senator B. Everett Jordan,
Senator Sam Ervin, Jr., R.
Phillip Hanes, Jr., Dr. Leo W.
Jenkins, Mrs. Norma P. Cates
and Bob Timberlake. The
testimonial banquet honoring
Senator Helms will be held on
February 12th, 1980 at the Royal
Villa in Raleigh. Chairman
Holding stated that “A prestig
ious and elegant tribute is being
planned to honor a man who has
been extensively involved in
civic, educational and philan
thropic activities in North
Carolina.”
Program participants will
include R. Stuart Dickson of
Charlotte, John R. McNair of
