Gold continues its wild climb as it broke the $800 barrier Thursday for the first time ever, only two days after it hit $700. One trader described the market as “absolutely nuts.” According to Sen. Jesse Helms it will cost the taxpayers more than $65 billion just to pay the interest for one year on the money that the federal govern ment has already borrowed and spent, in excess of income. The federal debt is now in excess of $800 billion and by the end of the year is expected to reach $900 billion. The Soviet-backed government in Afghanistan tells the U.S. journalists to leave, accusing them of biased reporting and “interference in the country’s internal affairs.” Today at 2:30 p.m. is the free General Travelogue at the Parish Hall of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church. Craig, Jr. Named Finalist Mary Roff Miss Mary Erwin Roff, Tryon High, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Roff of Tryon was one of six finalists selected from Western North Carolina high school seniors in competition for the 1980 Morehead Awards at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The finalists were selected on the characteristics of leadership and service, charac ter, academic achievement and physical vigor from among 25 nominees picked earlier by county committees from the 15 counties in District 10. Interviews were conducted last Monday in Asheville by the District Selec tion Committee. In addition to Miss Roff the other finalists were David William Hart, Asheville High, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard D. Hart of Asheville; Richard David Owens, Roberson High, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard G. Owens of Arden; Jane Blair Roberts, Asheville High, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roberts of Continued On Back Page Saluda Grant The Secretary of Human Resources, Dr. Sarah Morrow and Governor Jim Hunt have announced that state grants of some $11 million went to 69 local governments to assist in financ ing the construction of water supply system projects through the state. Among the state grants announced was one of $1,750 to Saluda. Green River Cove Mickey Lewis, Director of the Isothermal Development Com mission and chairman of the Green River Cove Local Advisory Committee will talk Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Mural Room of the Fine Art Center. His talk will be illustrated with slides on the Green River Cove area. Campobello defeated Lan drum, 30-19, in a 7th-8th grade game at Landrum. Jamie Henderson had 18 points for Campobello and Tony Kemmer- lin had 11 for Landrum. Campobello won the girls game 15-10. — Spartanburg Herald Dot Butler has returned to her home in Green Creek after visiting her sister, Ms. Elsie Pate in Los Angeles, Calif. She also attended a hair show while there. Marvin M. Helton filed Wed nesday for the Polk County School Board. He is from Cooper Gap Township. He and Andy Metcalf, the incumbent, are both seeking the Cooper Gap spot.
