Dr. Placak’s Talk
On Galapagos Trip
A record attendance of 112
crowded the Tryon Bird and
Nature Club’s meeting last
Friday to hear Dr. Joseph
Placak’s illustrated talk on his
visit last summer to the
Galapagos Islands.
In his introductory remarks,
Dr. Placak described the
geological origins of the islands
and their unusual isolation. Their
isolation, he explained, accounts
in large part for the diversity of
both the fauna and the flora that
have evolved on the islands.
Dr. Placak then related the
story of Darwin’s voyage to the
Galapagos in 1835 on the
“Beagle” and of Darwin’s
observation of the great variation
among the finches on the islands,
particularly in the shape of their
bills for adaptation to different
food sources. It was these
variations in the modification of

the species which may have

Following this introduction, Dr.
Placak showed a number of
slides he had taken last summer
and a film produced by the
University of California, which
maintains a laboratory on the
islands. These pictures showed a
number of close-ups of sea lions,
seals, lizzards, iguanas, colorful
variations of boobies and other
birds and the Darwin finches.
The most spectacular of the
subjects was an extraordinary
and unique “tool-using” bird,
who deftly employed a thin reed
in his bill to probe deeply into a
small hole and extract a
rewarding worm. — Reporter

TO CHECK POND ACIDITY
Acid waters (low pH) do not
respond well to fertilization and
therefore produce poor crops of
fish. The majority of the soils in
this area are acid and as a result
many ponds in the area are also
acid.
This means that even though
you may be fertilizing your pond
regularly, if the pH is not right,
you won’t have optimum condi
tions for fish production. In fact,
fertilization will do little good in a
pond with a low pH.
Bass and bluegills seldom
spawn in waters with a pH below
5.0. Growth is slow in ponds with
a pH range between 5.0 and 6.5.
Growth and reproduction are
satisfactory in waters with a pH
between 6.5 and 9.0.
Excess acidity in ponds can be
corrected by adding agricultural
limestone. However, before this
can be done effectively, the pond
water must be tested to see what
the pH level is.
This is a service provided free
by the Polk Soil and Water
Conservation District. Pond
owners may bring a small
sample of water from their pond
by the District Offict to be tested.
All samples should be put in a
clean glass container which has
been rinsed thoroughly with the
pond water. Samples should be
taken now so the pH level can be
corrected, if necessary, before it
is time to fertilize in the early
spring.
