Jerry James Is
Artist of Month
The Tryon Painters and Sculp
tors Artist for the Month of Feb.
is Jerry M. James of Duncan, S.
C. A reception will be held
Sunday, Feb. 2nd from 3 to 5 p.m.
at the Fine Arts Center.
Although he has had no formal
art training, he has been painting
most of his life. About 7 years
ago, he turned from the use of oil
to the media of acrylic and
watercolor. Using a limited
palette and emphasizing the
drybrush technique, the artist
paints the area he knows best, the
rural Piedmont. Many of his
paintings are done in and around
the 108 year old farmhouse in
which he now lives.
Mr. James has exhibited in a
number of major shows in both
the Pacific Northwest and the
Southwest. He has also had 19
one-man shows at various
galleries, colleges and banks in
this area. First place awards the
artist has received include
Seattle Artists’ Annual Exhibi
tion — Watercolor Award, Seattle
Guild of Northwest Watercolor
ists, Tacoma Art Festival, and
the Blue Ridge Invitational (1974,
1975 and 1976).
The artist has established a
special connection with Tryon in
his recent limited edition print of
the original painting of Oak Hall,
entitled, “Miss Clara’s Place.”
Seven states can be
seen from the summit
of North Carolina's
Mt. Mitchell, highest point
east of the Mississippi.
