Smart On BBB Board The Better Business Bureau of Asheville-Western North Caro lina held its annual membership meeting on January 22 in Central United Methodist Church in Asheville. The meeting was combined with the Asheville Civitan Club. North Carolina Attorney Gen eral Rufus Edmisten spoke on the topic, “How The Consumer Protection Division Benefits Business.” Officers and directors for the coming year were elected. K. C. Smart, President of WTYN Radio Station, was elected to represent Polk County on the Board. The Better Business Bureau serves 15 counties in Western North Carolina and may be called by dialing 1-800-452-2882 toll free. Crochet Class Mrs. Ed Komant will volunteer to teach a free crochet class at the Landrum Branch Library beginning January 31 and continuing through March 27. Classes are for beginners and will be held at night, 7:00 — 9:00. Persons interested may register by signing the registration sheet at the Landrum Branch Library or by calling 457-2218. Storyhour Is Thursday At4:00 Mr. Forgetful and Mr. Jelly are the new characters boys and girls will meet as Mrs. Chris Fitch presents them at the regular weekly Storyhour on Thursday Jan. 24, at the Landrum Library. Planned work for the Board for 1980 will be a proposed ordinance for control of odors and other obnoxious uses; also a Revised Mobile Home Park Ordinance. The Board meets the second Thursday in each month at 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse annex in Columbus, N. C. These are open meetings and the Board is anxious for all citizens with any ideas or criticisms to attend, as well as those who want to observe the workings of the Board. The Planning Board is compos ed of 9 volunteer members from all sections of the county, with a consultant and a secretary. W. E. Barnette Acting Chairman Jerry James Is Artist of Month The Tryon Painters and Sculp tors Artist for the Month of Feb. is Jerry M. James of Duncan, S. C. A reception will be held Sunday, Feb. 2nd from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center. Although he has had no formal art training, he has been painting most of his life. About 7 years ago, he turned from the use of oil to the media of acrylic and watercolor. Using a limited palette and emphasizing the drybrush technique, the artist paints the area he knows best, the rural Piedmont. Many of his paintings are done in and around the 108 year old farmhouse in which he now lives. Mr. James has exhibited in a number of major shows in both the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest. He has also had 19 one-man shows at various galleries, colleges and banks in this area. First place awards the artist has received include Seattle Artists’ Annual Exhibi tion — Watercolor Award, Seattle Guild of Northwest Watercolor ists, Tacoma Art Festival, and the Blue Ridge Invitational (1974, 1975 and 1976). The artist has established a special connection with Tryon in his recent limited edition print of the original painting of Oak Hall, entitled, “Miss Clara’s Place.” Seven states can be seen from the summit of North Carolina's Mt. The guest speaker will be Dr. Richard Zaino, Pathologist at St. Luke’s Hospital, who will speak on “Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer.” Dr. Zaino is a native of New Jersey and is a graduate of Duke University Medical School where he also did his residency.
