No official weather report for
the weekend, but we didn’t get all
of the rain that we were
promised. The weekend was
cloudy, but rather nice. The sun
was out Monday and it seemed
spring-like outside.
Scientists of the U. S.
Geological Survey say they have
discovered five huge undersea
basins off Alaska believed to
contain major petroleum depos
its, the New York Times reported
Sunday.
The 9th sizable earthquake in
four days rattled the Livermore
Valley of Northern California on
Sunday, but there was no new
damage or injuries according to
authorities. Scientists warned
more quakes can be expected in
the area.
Abolhassan Bani-Sadr, whose
apparent victory in Iran’s first
presidential election has been
taken as an encouraging sign for
the American hostages, said
Sunday a solution to the crisis
“becomes attainable” if the U. S.
does not meddle in Iranian
affairs.

News From Wingo
The January 28th issue of
Sports Illustrated has an article
“Basketball Italian Style” by
Bruce Newman. One large
picture shows Harthorne Wingo
and his wife Dianne on the canals
of Venice. A former member of
the New York Knicks, Wingo is in
his fourth season in Italy, playing
for Superga-Mestre.
A graduate of Tryon High
School, Wingo never went any
further in school than one year in
Junior College and had to earn
his spot in the NBA by making a
name for himself on the
playgrounds of New York and in
the Eastern League.
According to the article Wingo
speaks Italian now, enjoys the
country, considers his assimila
tion into the culture a success and
has brought his new wife Dianne,
an American, to live in Mestre, a
city near Venice. “The Italian
fans seem to enjoy Wingo’s
agressive style of play, and they
love to shout his name —

Fires
The Columbus Volunteer Fire
Department was called to the
Walter Lehner home on Peniel
Road Friday about 8:45 p.m. The
soot in the chimney caught fire,
but no damage was done.
Saturday about 5:15 p.m. the
Columbus Volunteer Fire Depart
ment was called to a grass fire at
the intersection of I-26 and Hwy.
74. A small area was burned
before the firemen arrived.
For School Board
Fred “Willie” Arledge
Fred “Willie” Arledge, 38, has
filed for the Polk County School
Board from Coopers Gap
Township. A native of Polk
County, Mr. Arledge is a 1959
graduate of Mill Spring High
School and a 1965 graduate of
Asheville Tech in Electronics and.
Television. He is a foreman with
Flynnmoore Construction Inc.
Mr. Arledge is Vice President
of the Polk Central Boosters
Club. He is a deacon and Sunday
School teacher in Beulah Baptist
Church. He is married to the
former Carolyn Price and they
have two children — Scott, a
junior at Polk Central and Lisa,
an eighth grade student at Polk
Central.
The Tryon Painters and
Sculptors Artist for the month of
February is Jerry M. James of
Duncan, S. C. A reception will be
held Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at
the Fine Arts Center.

have until noon Monday, Feb. 4th
in which to file with the Polk
County Board of Elections.
Vining Seeks Tryon
School Board
Seth M. Vining, Jr. has filed for
re-election to the Tryon School
Board.
Mr. Vining, a graduate of
Tryon High School and Duke
University, has been with the
Tryon Daily Bulletin since 1951
after serving two years as File
Clerk with the U.S. House of
Representatives. He has been
active in a number of civic
organizations and served 8 years
as a Polk County Commissioner.
He is married to the former
Marjorie Boswell of Washington,
D. C. and they have four sons and
one grandson.
