Q. My apple trees have fire
blight each year. I cut off infected
limbs with clippers dipped in
chlorine bleach but the disease
seems to get worse. Any
suggestions? (C. D., Como)
A. Keep pruning with clippers
dipped in Chlorox and try these
additional suggestions. Use one
hand to handle diseased limbs
and one hand to handle healthy
limbs. (You can spread fire
blight with your hands as well as
with clippers.) Cut out infected
twigs as soon as the first

twigs or limbs 10 to 12 inches
below the symptoms. The
bacteria which cause fire blight
moves down inside the twigs
before the outward symptoms
are visible. Therefore, never cut
through the (visibly) infected

Q. When is the best time to
prune or trim a hemlock hedge?

A. Early spring before new
growth starts. If you want a
dense hedge, shear it with hand
or electric shears. Tip prune
rather than shear, if your
hemlocks are planted to grow as
a natural screen and you want to
enhance their beauty. (Kim

Q. I saved seed from a very
large pumpkins last fall. If I plant
these seed this spring will they
produce the same kinds of
pumpkins? (H. S., Halifax)
A. Only if you controlled the
pollination of the pumpkin from
which you saved seed. If it was
permitted to pollinate at random,
you are likely to get pumpkins of
all shapes, sizes and colors this

Q. Are there any general guides
for rotating vegetables in a
garden? I have only one spot for a
WM'
garden, so I must rotate
vegetables within the garden. (D.

A. Rotation is an excellent
means of controlling several
soil-borne diseases, particularly
nematodes. However, rotation
may not control some of the foliar
diseases, such as early blight of
tomatoes, in an area as small as a
home garden. One suggestion is
to divide your garden into thirds.
Plant one-third in cool season
vegetables such as lettuce,
radish, cabbage and broccoli.
Plant one-third in warm season
vegetables such as tomatoes,
peppers and beans. Plant the
remaining third in corn. Then
rotate the sections each year. The
goal is to avoid planting
vegetables of the same family in
the same location year after
