The Reynolds Family The January 10th issue of The Fauquier Democrat, published in Warrenton, Va. devoted two pages to “The Reynolds Clan Works, Wins Together As A Family”. The article written by Rosanne Berkenstock had pic tures of the entire Arthur Reynolds family, and then one of each of them, either riding or standing near a horse. Each year at the annual meeting of the Virginia Horse Shows Association a recipient is announced for the association’s special Mongomery Award which is given for meritorious achieve ment and sportsmanship in connection with the VHSA. This year the award went to an entire family — the family of J. Arthur Reynolds of Warrenton. Rey nolds, his wife, Edna, their son, J. Arthur II (Bucky), their daughter Betty Oare, her husband Ernest and their son Morey were all on hand for the presentation. The Reynolds family moved to Tryon in 1939 and stayed here for 22 years. The article tells how each member of the family started riding horses and their experi ences and honors over the years. Bucky is a Wofford graduate, Betty is a Converse graduate and Ernie a UNC at Chapel Hill graduate, but all work with horses. Each member of the Reynolds- Oare family has a different interest and emphasis in the horse world. For Bucky, the buying and selling of show horses occupies much of his time. He is constantly on the go, either showing or traveling to look at new prospects, or judging one of the many horse shows at which he officiates each year. He owns the main 15 acres at Merry- weather Farm, and rents an additional 85 acres. His facilities include a 40 stall stable and indoor ring, as well as two show CARO-Mi DINING ROOM OPEN AT5P.M. Arthur Reynolds also concentrates on buying and showing quality hunters, he in addition dabbles successfully in a variety of other fields. The Reynolds live at 145 Main St., but the horses are stabled at Kilmaurs off Springs Road, Kilmaurs provides an 18 stall stable with indoor exercise area, a five-eight mile track, show ring and paddocks “right in the center of the hunting country.” Betty spends most of her time riding for her father, although she does often show her own horses'. Ernie concentrates his major efforts on race horses. He now owns and operates a 20 stall barn at the Middleburg Training Track where he is one of the stockholders. Mrs. Reynolds never developed a taste for riding. “My job is the paperwork”, she says and “serving as chaperone for the hundreds of children we’ve taken all over the country.” She estimates that 8 or 10 juniors travel with them each year as they show all over the east. She also owns a few of the horses in the Reynolds barn. Nine-year-old Morey is also following in the footsteps of other family members. He won the short stirrup championship at the , Loudoun Pony & Junior Show last year. J. Arthur, Bucky, Betty and Ernie all hold recognized judges cards. Betty was named the outstand ing horsewoman of the year by the VHSA in 1978. According to the article, the oldest son, Robert, was never really bitten by the riding bug although he rode occasionally when he was growing up. He now works at the Pentagon, but often visits the rest of the family in Warrenton. TOUR HAWAII 8 day — 7 nights, Wilcox World Tours — Depart Greenville Air port, July 22.
