State Insurance Commissioner
John Ingram filed as a
Democratic candidate for re-
election Monday and then fired
his chief deputy commissioner
who had just become a candidate
for the job himself.
Thomas Bingham is a candi
date for the Buncombe County
School Board. Bingham, 26, is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam
Bingham and grandson of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bingham of
Tryon
Kurt Thomas, the first
American to win an all-around
medal in world gymnastics
competition, received the Ama
teur Athletic Union’s prestigious
Sullivan Award Monday night as
the nation’s outstanding amateur
athlete for 1979.
Jane Dusenbury had an article
in the Asheville Citizen recently
on “Lunch Hour Happy Time at
Tryon’s City Schools.” The
article was on Charles Stafford
and the meals served in the
school cafeteria and the salad bar
at the high school.

Ruff Files
For Commissioner
Billy Hugh Ruff
Billy Hugh Ruff has filed as a
candidate for Polk County
Commissioner subject to the
Democratic Primary. Mr. Ruff
has previously served over six
years on the Board of Commis
sioners.
He owns and operates one of
the largest sawmills in the area
and also operates a planer mill. A
farmer, he grows corn, soybeans,
small grain and apples. A past
president of the Polk County
Cattlemen’s Association, he
raises Black Angus cattle.
He has served on the Board of
St. Luke’s Hospital, WNCSHA
Board, Social Service, Region C
Law Enforcement, Sheltered
Workshop. He is a member of the
Sunny View Ruritan Club, has
served three years as Master of
Horse Creek Lodge, is a Shriner
and Woodman.
He is married to the former

Blanton Files For
School Board
Clint Blanton
Clint Blanton has filed for the
Polk County School Board from
Columbus Township.
He is a graduate of Polk
Central High School, class of 1964
(first four year class at Polk
Central).
Mr. Blanton is manager of
Customer Service at Bommer
Industry, where he has been
employed for 11 years. He holds
an Associate Degree from
Rutledge College in Manage
ment. He was in the U. S. Army
for two years, where he was
personel specialist at Fort
Jackson. He is a member and
past deacon at the Columbus
Baptist Church and is Royal
Ambassador Director and-
Sunday School teacher.
He is married to the former
Harriette Splawn, who is a
kindergarten teacher at Stearns
School. They have two daughters,

Horne Files For
County Commissioner
A. Vernon Horne
A. Vernon Horne has announc
ed that he has filed with the Polk
County Board of Elections as a
candidate for Polk County
Commissioner, subject to the
May 6 Republican Party Primary
Election.
A life long resident of Polk
County. He attended Green Creek
High School and Cecil’s Business
College in Spartanburg, majoring
in Business Administration. He is
married to the former Frances
Daves of Cleveland County, they
have two grown children, Wayne
and Cindy.
Mr. Horne has been in the Real
Estate business for 13 years, 10
years as President of Horne
Realty. He was Development
Consultant and Exclusive Agent
for Ridgeview Acres, Co-owner
and developer of Foxwood Hills.
He is a member of Mills Creek
Church of the Brethren. Charter
