The State highway crews and
the Town of Tryon did a good job
in clearing the roads and most
people were able to come and go
as long as they were careful. It
was another beautiful snow. Just
enough to cover the trees and
ground and not too much on the
highways.

Sex education has been
suspended from 10th grade
biology classes at Chapman High
School in Inman until an
investigation of course content
can be made by a committee to
be appointed by the Spartanburg
County School District 1 Board of
Trustees. More than 100 people

Babs Sentenced
To One Year
Lt. Earl Barnett of the
Greenville County Sheriff’s De
partment stated Wednesday that
Larry Dean Babs received a 1
year sentence in connection with
the death of Don Schulz, 18, of
Manhattan Beach, Calif, who was
killed last July 15th when hit by a
boat on Lake Lanier.
Babs had been charged with
involuntary manslaughter and
leaving the scene of an accident.
On July 17th the Greenville
County Sheriff’s Department
obtained a search warrant and
recovered a large amount of
stolen goods at Babs’ home at
Lake Lanier.
Tryon PTA Meets
February 21st
The Tryon PTA will meet
February 21st at 8 p.m. Following
a short business meeting, the
program will be turned over to
the American Field Service (or
International Exchange Pro
gram), the Childrens Theater
Festival and the American
Cancer Society.
Refreshments will be served
following the meeting.

The Tryon School Board will
meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the
Superintendent’s office at the
high school.

Travel Group
Keith Crain, a teacher at Polk
Central HS has been appointed by
the American Institute for
Foreign Study (AIFS) to accom
pany a group of students on an
exciting adventure-travel pro
gram abroad. The program is
organized by the American
Institute for Foreign Study of
Greenwich, Connecticut. AIFS
has been developing educational
travel programs abroad for over
15 years: More than 150,000
students have participated in
these “experiences” abroad.
On the program, “Great
European Adventure”, students
will visit London, Amsterdam,
Bonn, Brussels and Paris. The
itinerary includes such places as
Parliament, Notre Dame, the
Rijks museum, the Grand Place
and the Arc de Triomphe.

Meets Monday
The Polk County School Board
will meet Monday at 8 p.m. in the
Superintendent’s office in the
courthouse annex.

Jenny Owens
Is Featured
The Friday, Feb. 1st issue of
the Charlotte Observer had a
feature on Jenny Owens, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Owens of
Pineville, formerly of Tryon, who
is playing basketball for South
Mecklenburg High School. It
appeared in the “High School
Corner” — Here’s Looking At...
“Jenny Owens, South Mecklen
burg: South Mecklenburg is
currently in a 3-way tie for
second place in the Southwestern
4A, and a big reason is Owens.
She hit 18 points Friday and 16
Tuesday, despite playing only
about a half in each contest
(South gave its reserves plenty of
playing time in each game.)In
Tuesday’s 74-45 victory over West
Mecklenburg, Owens connected
on 7 of 9 from the floor, mostly
from the 15-foot range. A 5-8
junior, she played varsity last
year and has been making steady
improvement. “She really has
good court sense”, said South
coach Estelle Barentine.”
Mrs. White
Named Clerk
The Board of Supervisors of the
Polk County Soil and Water
Conservation District have
appointed Mrs. Margaret B.
White as temporary clerk for the
District effective February 4,
1980. She will replace Mrs. Inez
Jackson who is taking a leave of
absence. Mrs. White is the wife of
