The Tryon Town Council met
Monday night at the Tryon Town
Hall. Mayor Ken Tucker present
ed a special proclamation to the
Tryon Rotary Club to honor the
75th Anniversary of Rotary
International. Wm. H. Symmes,
Robert L. Kohlbry and James
Moore were present from the
Tryon Rotary Club to receive the
proclamation.
The Board held a public
hearing for the purpose of
considering the issuance of one
additional taxi cab certificate
requested by Ann Reynolds. The
Board approved the issuance of
one certificate to Ms. Reynolds.
The Board approved a water
adjustment for Mrs. Evelyn Hood
of Pacolet Valley.
The Board adjourned to
Executive Session to consider
personnel appointments to Town
Boards. The following were
appointed subject to acceptance:
Planning Board: Allan Pruette,
one year; James Payne, 2 years;
Laxton Hamrick, 3 years. To the
Board of Adjustments: Gay
Corpening, 1 year ; Ellis Fincher
2 years; Dick Gaut, 3 years. For
appointments to the Board in a 1
mile extra Territorial area from
the city limits the town will
submit to the county a list of
recommendations. The County
appoints 3 of each to these
boards.
Appointed to the Firemens
Relief Board were Dr. C. W.
McCall and R. B. Scruggs to 3
year terms. Other members of
the Board are James Cowan and
Woodrow Hague, appointed by
the Fire Department and Carroll

Insurance Commissioner.
The Board approved the
purchase of 17 pocket radio
pagers for members of the Fire
Department. This will replace all
fire phones and enable the
firemen to be paged whether they
are at work or at home. Tryon
Fire Chief Clarence Scoggins
expressed his pleasure of the
purchase of the pagers. The funds
to buy the pagers will come from
Federal Revenue Sharing.
Mrs. Mae Melton
Mrs. Mae Bell Melton, 86, of
Landrum, S. C., widow of Robert
Vance Melton died Sunday
afternoon.
A native of Fairview, N. C., she
was a daughter of the late Joe
and Pecilla Searcy Colley. She
was a Baptist.
Surviving are: daughters, Mrs.
Irene Johnson, Landrum, Mrs.
Wilma Tapp of Spartanburg,
Mrs. Thelma Hannon and Mrs.
Alma Spicer of Inman, S. C.;
sons, Bill Melton of Landrum and
R. J. Melton of Spartanburg;
sister, Mrs. Lillie Hudgins of I
Spartanburg; 42 grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday at
2 p.m. at the Petty Funeral Home
with the Rev. Paul Stephens
officiating. Burial was in Walnut
Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. 1

The February 11, 1980 Tryon
School Board meeting was short,
and all members were present.
The budget report was read and
approved.
Mrs. Vickie Justice was hired
as reading aide for 3rd grade,
replacing Mrs. Fran Carruth,
who had resigned.
Bob Gregg resigned as janitor.
Marvin Greene will assume
janitorial duties and continue
teaching art in the elementary
grades. Arrangements will be
made for the high school art
working with other teachers and
with artists in the community.
Chairman Vining suggested 1
that congratulations be given to 1
both the boys’ and the girls’ 1
basketball teams, which won in 1
their Conference. Special men- 1
lion was made of the excellence 1
