Pierre Elliott Trudeau and his Liberal Party surged back to the leadership of Canada Monday in a national election that gave him a majority government. Actor Andy Griffith fell from the roof of his North Hollywood home Sunday as he was trying to cover it with plastic during the rain. Griffith broke a bone in his lower back and will be in the hospital about a week. One storm right after another hits the West Coast. Mudslides and high water have caused millions of dollars in damage in Southern California. Parents of students in District One Schools have been asked to beware of a contagious rash that is spreading among students and to exame their children each day for signs of a severe “Itching Condition.” Instructions on what to do have been sent home by Alice M. AFS Board members and Continued On Back Page Tryon PTA Meeting Postponed The Tryon PTA meeting scheduled for February 21 has been postponed for one week until Thursday, February 28 at 8:00 p.m. in the Tryon Elementary School Auditorium. The PTA board of directors decided to postpone their meeting so that all parents could attend the basketball game Tryon is expected to play this week and the PTA meeting next Thursday. Stearns PTA Meets Thursday The Stearns School PTA will meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the school. Mrs. Feagan’s 5th Grade will present a program. Columbus Lions Meet Thursday The Columbus Lions Club will meet Thursday, Feb. 21 at the Columbus Restaurant. The pro gram will be presented by Arnold Grape, Leadership Development Chairman of Camp Dogwood for the Blind. This is a Lion’s sponsored project. CHICAGO, ILL. — William McKay, president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association, Hendersonville, North Carolina has been appoint ed to the 1980 COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND LAND USE of the United States League of Savings Associations. Gymnastic Championship Set For March 1 The 1980 South Carolina High School State Gymnastic Champ ionship will be March 1, in Spartanburg. The championships are hosted by Landrum High School in the Hodge Center at USC-S. There will be twelve teams competiting for state champion honors. It will be the first year that all competitive classes are combin ed to determine state champions. Dan Young, the Landrum Coach said the new scoring rules should make the meet more team competitive and exciting. Meet Schedule: 9:15 a.m., Class I & II; 1:45 p.m., Class III; 7:15 p.m., Optionals. A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. David L. Crook (Hazel Thompson) of Pensacola, Florida, are parents of a son, Nicholas Benjamin, on January 11th at the Naval Aerospace and Regional Medical Center in Pensacola. Mr. Crook is a paralegal specialist at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, and Mrs. Crook is a bookkeeper with General Busi ness Services. Grandparents are: Mr. and Mrs. Raymond L. Crook, Forest City, N. C. and Richmond Thompson, Columbus. Great- grandparents are Mrs. Myra Crook of Rutherfordton, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Carroll of Spindale and Mrs. Lillie Kimbrell of Tryon. A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hall of Landrum, S. C. are parents of a daughter, Karen Denise, born Feb. 16th at Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg. She has a brother, Tracy, age 6. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hall of Landrum and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Ridings of Chesnee, S. C. A great-grand mother is Mrs. Malessie Jones of Chesnee. Heart Sunday Sunday, Feb. 24th is Heart Sunday and Polk County canvas sers will make a neighbor to neighbor call. The canvassers will have a Dutch treat breakfast Thursday at 9 a.m. at The Dinner Bell, Melrose Ave., Tryon, to be conducted by Franklin C. Basler, President. Board Chairman, A. T. Pagter, Jr., M.D., will keynote the program. The theme will be posed by Mrs. Wade Wilmoth of Boone of the North Carolina Heart Association. Canvassing kits will be distributed and any canvass ers’ questions will be clarified by Donna Jobe, Western Field Consultant, N. C. Heart Associa tion. Fred M.
