Judge Wm. McLean
William K. McLean, an
80-year-old Asheville attorney
and former senior resident
Buncombe County Superior Court
judge died Monday in an
Asheville hospital foilowing a
heart attack.
McLean was Principal and
teacher at Green Creek High
School and in business before
beginning the practice of law in
1929. While in Polk County he

represented the county in the 1931
State Senate.
He was educated in Asheville,
Elon College, Deauanna Univer
sity in France and was a
graduate of Wake 'Forest Law
School. He was a veteran of
World Wars I and II.
He was named a special
Superior Court judge by former
Gov. W. Kerr Scott in 1952 and
served until June 30, 1953. He
practiced law with Lamar
Gudger and Bruce Elmore from
1953 until 1958 when he was
elected to the Superior Court
bench, a seat he kept until his
retirement in 1975.
McLean was solicitor of the
19th District for four years and
friends and observers said his
experience as a prosecutor gave
him his reputation for being
tough on those convicted in his
court.
Active in polictics, he was a
1956 delegate to the Democratic
National Convention.
The son of the late I. N. and
Julia Buckner McLean, he is
survived by his wife, Clara
Whithead McLean; a sister, Mrs.
Vonnie McLean Hipps of Ashe
ville.
The funeral will be today
(Thurs.) at 2:30 p.m. at West
Funeral Home in Weaverville.
