Thursday was like a spring day. Alice Roosevelt Longworth, 96, daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, died Wednesday. Her father became president in 1901 when she was 17 years old. Damage climbs to $350 million as new floods hit Arizona. California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., whose home in Laurel Canyon was flooded Tuesday declared a state of emergency and added four counties to the two where property owners already were eligible for low interest disaster loans. The Tryon High girls basket- ball team play Hiwassee Dam tonight at Tuscola. Duke Endowment announces that it has made annual operating grants to 229 hospitals and children’s home in N. C. and S. C. St. Luke’s Hospital received $2,171. General Tire & Rubbe.r Co. will close its Arrowood Industrial Park plant in Charlotte for one week, laying off more than 700 employees. Fires The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to a fire Wednesday night and one early Thursday morning. Wednesday night they were called to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Pruette (former Welborn home) where a pan of oil on the stove caught fire and in turn set the cabinets on fire. Mr. Pruette used a fire extinguisher that was located in the kitchen and had the fire out when the firemen arrived a few minutes after the alarm was turned in. Thursday morning the firemen were called to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Torreno on Grady Ave. (the former Hagy house) where the chimney caught fire. No damage was done. Special Services There will be a special service Sunday at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. at Maybry’s Temple in Campobello. Elder Lewis McDowell will be the guest speaker. Rev. A. L. Jackson is the sponsor. Girl Scout Family Reunion Beginning March 8 and lasting^ through March 15,1980, is Nation al Girl Scout Week. Pisgah Girl Scout Council, which serves the sixteen western-most counties in North Carolina, is planning a very special celebration for this 68th year of Girl Scouting. The celebration will be all day Saturday, March 15, in the Asheville Mall. There will be displays, live demonstrations, skits and many entertaining and educating booths to see. Contributions to the celebration are coming from all sixteen counties and will be up for the entire day. Another special event during the day will be a cake cutting at 2:30 p.m. to honor the 68th birthday of Girl Scouting in the United States. Cutting the cake will be the oldest Girl Scout within Pisgah Council’s jurisdic tion. Currently, Pisgah is trying to locate this person. If you ■ or anyone you know was a GirrScout when she was a child or teenager, please contact Pisgah Council at 252-4442. The current title holder has been in since 1917.
