Needs New Technology For the first time in a century, public support for, science and technology in the United States is declining. If this decline keeps up, it will mean big trouble. For a hundred years, from the inventions of Edison to the walk on the moon, science was an occupation of glamor. But apparently its very success created such impossibily high expectations that when the nation that put a man on the moon could not turn right around and eliminate poverty, halt crime and guarantee the brotherhood of man, some Americans felt let down. Others fear the danger that sometimes accompanies scienti fic progress, such as risks from nuclear power. But America: cannot afford to lose its scientific leadership if it hopes to continue paying its work force the highest wages in the world. Highly paid American workers simply cannot compete success fully with the cheap labor of other countries without superior tech nology to add to the value of the hardware.
