HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
OF POLK COUNTY
Lt. Commander Paul Butler,
retired U.S.N., a native
Tryonite, will be the speaker at
the next meeting of the Historical
Association on March 4th at the
Polk County Library, Columbus.
His subject will be “Historical
Markers and Interesting Facts
about this Area.” He was
chairman of the 1976 Centennial
Celebration; he has been an
active supporter and participant
in the March of the Overmoun
tain Men, commemorating the
American Victory at Kings
Mountain in 1780. He was
influential in getting the Histori
cal Marker replaced at Howard
Gap after I-26 was built.
Of much interest to the student
of Polk County history will be his
display of books and materials
used in his research. It is an
extensive bibliography.
The day is Tuesday, March 4.
