The origin of the Polk County
Community Foundation and its
accomplishments to date will be
reported to Rotarians at 12:45
p.m. Friday when they gather at
the Pacolet River Plantation for
a luncheon meeting.
The reporters will be Rotarians
John G. Landrum, Jr., Chairman
of the Foundation and Paul E.
Culberson, Executive Director.
The Foundation was formed in
response to Community demand
as confirmed by a questionnaire
circulated through the area and
is based on community needs.
The Foundation receives money
from members of the Community
as gifts, administers the funds
and makes distribution to
Community activities-the Foun
dation itself is not engaged in
any community activity. To date
$50,000 has been distributed.
The Rotary program will
include slides illustrating the
activities supported by these
funds. Included among the
beneficiaries are the Tryon
Depot, John G. Landrum, Jr.
Educational Fund, AFS Endow
ment Fund, Children’s Theatre
Festival, the Tryon Stairs, 4-H
Youth Foundation, Boy Scouts,
Landrum Recreation Commis
sion and others.

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED
The World Day of Prayer will
be celebrated by Church Women
United in the Congregational
Church Friday morning March 7
at 10:30.
Women from 150 countries will
be meeting for this worship
service. The subject “Respons
ible Freedom”. The services are
prepared each year by women
from a different country, this
year, Thailand.
Twelve churches in the Colum
bus-Tryon area under the
leadership of Mrs. Richard
Landis, Tryon United Methodist
Church and first vice-president of
C.W.U. will be taking part. The
call to worship will be led by Mrs.
Roy Batie, president of CWU who
is from St. John’s Catholic
Church. Bible Readings from the
old and new testaments will be
read by Mrs. Frank Brown; St.
Lukes CME; Meditation and
prayers by Mrs. Ralph D.
Junker, the Church of the Holy
Cross; Joseph Erwin, organist of
the Congregational Church will
be at the organ. All interested
men and women are invited.
