Home Destroyed
By Fire Here
The Tryon Volunteer Fire
Department was called to a fire
Monday at 6:26 a.m. at 419
Markham Road. The fire was at
the home of Ms. Lucille Austin.
She told firemen that the wood
stove exploded and blew the
stack from the chimney and
caught the entire room on fire.
Ms. Austin and L. H'. Vernon
escaped the house by jumping
through a window. Both were cut
by glass and were taken to St.
Luke’s Hospital by the Polk
County Rescue Squad where they
were treated.
Due to the strong winds,
adjoining homes were in danger
of catching fire. The firemen
were able to keep the fire from
spreading, but the Austin home
was gutted.
