Monday, but the warm sun
melted the snow and ice from the
highways allowing things to get
back to normal. Tuesday was
mild, but cloudy.
The Tryon Little Theater
tryouts for “A Shot in the Dark”
are tonight and Friday at 7:30 at
the Fine Arts Center. The play to
be directed by Jeanne Hoffman
has parts for 3 women and 5 men.
Gary Towlen, Pianist will be at
the Fine Arts Center Thursday at
8:15 p.m. in a benefit perform
ance.
Spring can’t be too far away as
Little League baseball tryouts
are Saturday and Sunday at
Harmon Field. The Saturday
tryouts begin at 1 p.m. and on
Sunday at 2 p.m.
NORTH-SOUTH BRIDGE
Results of the North-South
Duplicate Bridge Monday night
at the home of Al Daniel were as
follows: 1st. Al Daniel and Ed
Ryerson; 2nd (tie) John Fisher
and Earl Riber with Gene
Hempel and Gren Sewall. The
next session will be at the home of
Jim Davis.
Mrs. John Rhodes of Stony
Knoll is a patient at St. Luke’s
Hospital.
Little League
Tryouts Sat. & Sun.
The Polk County Little League
will hold tryouts Saturday and
Sunday at Harmon Field. Satur
day the tryouts will begin at 1
p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Boys
and girls who will be 9 by August
1st and not 13 are eligible. Bring
birth certificates for proof of age.
Drug Abuse
At Rotary
Drug abuse throughout the
United States and locally will be
analysed for Rotarians gathering
at 12:45 Friday at the Pacolet
River Plantation for a luncheon
meeting.
The analyst will be Officer
Robert W. McKee of the Polk
County Sheriff’s Department. A
lifetime resident of Polk County
Officer McKee is a graduate of
Mill Spring High School. Origi
nally employed in the textile
trade as Lab technician, super
visor and assistant plant man
ager, Officer McKee left textiles
for police work in 1975. Since
joining the Sheriff’s force he has
taken courses adding up to 168
hours of Basic Law Enforcement
Certification. Courses at Iso
thermal College and Blue Ridge
Tech included Criminal Law,
Service of Civil Process, Crimi
nal Investigation and Domestic
and Violence Law. At the N.C.
Justice Academy he completed a
course in Drug Investigation; in
Washington, D. C., he attended

Building Explodes;
Man Injured
The Mill Spring Antique Shop
at the intersection of Hwy. 108
and Hwy. 9 at Mill Spring was
destroyed by fire Tuesday
morning. Bobby Bishop of
Bishop’s Grocery across the
Hwy. said that Charles E.
Cathcart of Rt. 1, Lake Lure was
opening the shop around 8 a.m.
when a loud explosion occurred.
The blast blew Mr. Cathcart out
of the building. The Mill Spring
Antique Shop was destroyed by
fire and the adjoining Lynch’s
Fabric Shop was heavily damag
ed.
Mr. Cathcart, 54, was taken to
St. Luke’s Hospital by ambulance
where he was being treated for
burns on his face and legs. He
was transferred to the Burn
Center, Baptist Hospital in
Winston-Salem.
Tryon Tennis Team
Opens Thursday
The Tryon High School boys
tennis team opens its season
Thursday at Brevard. Three
home matches will follow on the
7th, 11th and 13th at Harmon
Field with Landrum, Henderson
ville and Traveler’s Rest.
The team is coached by Mrs.
Annette Stafford who is assisted
by Doug Stirling. Mrs. Stafford
said that the team has a number
of returning lettermen who are
led by seniors Bryan Corpening

Young Careerist
Thursday Night
The annual BPW “Young
Careerist” program will be held
Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at
the Pacolet River Plantation
Restaurant. Vying for the title of
“Young Careerist” are Elizabeth
McCallister of Landrum, Phyllis
Crain of Green Creek, and Lynn
Scoggins of Tryon. Mrs. McCal
lister teaches French at Tryon
High School. Phyllis Crain, also a
teacher, is employed by 0. P.
Earle Elementary School, teach
ing language arts in the fifth and
sixth grades. Mrs. Scoggins is
Director of Student Services at
Limestone College.
Thursday evening’s winner will
participate in the “Young
Careerist” program at the
district level, April 20 in Canton.
The “Young Careerist” program
is BPW’s way of honoring
successful young career women.
