A. T. Pagter, Jr., M.D. Bd. Chairman; Franklin C. Basler, President; and Fred M. Schairer, Fund Raising Chair man concur that results from all efforts — Special and corporate gifts, Heart Sunday and business canvasses, church sponsored dinners, Rock ’n’ Roll Jambo rees, side-walk balloon days — were gratifyingly successful. The composite result, in funds raised — some $12,000 — and in extent of community involvement, marks the second consecutive year of the successful re-establishment of Polk County as an effective unit of North Carolina Heart Assn. Certainly, it greatly affects the future happiness of two people. But more than that, society at large also has an interest in marriage be cause marriage is the foundation of a family. To protect society’s interest in the institution of marriage all states have enacted laws designed to ensure both the legality and the stability of the marriage union. Many couples view mar ¬ riage as a serious spiritual commitment. It is also a legal contract. However, marriages are usually entered into on the basis of a couple’s love, faith and trust in each other, and not on the basis of carefully negotiated documents. Nevertheless, marriage has legal conse quences in such areas as estates, inheritance, tax ation and support. Your local library has a free leaflet on marriage, published as a public service by The Lawyers of North Carolina. Skin-saving tip: You’re not fully protected in the shade of a beach umbrella.
