John B. Connally, declaring
that Ronald Reagan “is still the
champion” withdrew from the
Republican presidential race
Sunday, one day after he was
soundly thrashed by Reagon in
their first primary battle in the
south. He was soundly defeated in
South Carolina by Reagan as the
former California governor won
all six of the state’s congressional
districts and captured all 25 of
South Carolina’s delegates to the
GOP National Convention at
Detroit in July.
The Polk County Historical
Assn, will meet today at 2:30 at
the Polk County Library in
Columbus. Paul Butler will talk
on “Historical Highlights of This
Area.”
The Polk County Democrats
will hold precinct meetings at the
regular polling places Thursday
at 8 p.m.
The Tryon Boosters Club will
meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the
high school.
Friday at 8:30 p.m. “Diary of a
Scoundrel,, will be given at the
Fine Arts Center.

State Champions
The East Hall High School
Lady Vikings of Gainesville, Ga.
won the Georgia 2-A State
Basketball Championship Satur
day night when they defeated
Crawford County 38-34 in the
Coliseum in Macon, Ga. They
defeated Vidalia High School
48-44 Friday night in the
semi-finals.
This is the second straight year
that East Hall has won the State
Championship. The Lady Vikings
are coached by Seth A. Vining, a
former Tryon High School and
Western Carolina University
graduate. He is married to the
former Cathy Fincher of Tryon,
also a graduate of Tryon High
and Western Carolina and a
teacher at East Hall. They have
one son, Adam, who is 19 months
old.
Tryon Boosters
Meet Thursday
The Tryon Boosters Club will
meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the
high school. President Carroll
Scoggins said that plans would be
made for the Steeplechase and
that if possible all members
should be present.
A New Arrival
Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Simpson
of Rt. 1, Tryon are parents of a
daughter, Tiffany Janel, born
March 7 at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Maternal grandparents are
Rev. and Mrs. James Lowrance
of Tryon.
Dance Workshop
A special 2 session Folk and
Square Dance Workshop will be
held at the Pickin’ Parlor onj
March 14 and 28. Planned as an
introduction to Folk and Square
Dancing, the participants will
learn squares, reels and contras.
The learn by dancing approach
should be fun for both beginners
and experienced dancers of all
ages.
Instructors for the class are
Jackie and Craig Williams of
Tryon. Old Time dance music
will be provided by the Pickin’
Parlor Band. No pre-registration
is necessary. The Pickin’ Parlor
meets at the 4-H Center in
Columbus on Mar. 14 and 28 at
7:30.
March Exhibit
At Polk County
Library
March brings promise of many
things, not the least of which is
the fishing season.
Mrs. William G. Kelly (Mary)
is a fisherman and has been
collecting antique rods, reels
and bait — through the years.
Some of her collection is on
exhibit at the Library. They date
from the early 1800’s. The
materials used are combinations
of solid woods and bamboo. One
has striking inlay of greenheart
and lancewood.
The Henshaw black brass rod,
1880, is of solid and split Calcutta
cane.
