S. V. Ruritans
Learn Of Cancer
Following the regular supper
meeting of the Sunny View
Ruritan Club on March 3,
President Roger Wilson turned
the program over to Dr. Vanna
Magsino, Public Education
Chairman of the Polk County
Unit of the American Cancer
Society, who introduced the
speaker, Dr. Ralph D. Junker
Dr. Junker explained what
cancer is and that considerable
mystery remains about what
distinguishes cancerous from
normal cells. He described how
the application ,of science has
improved understanding, diag
nosis and treatment of cancer,
but emphasized that treatment
must be varied in each individual
case. He went on to say that
physicians have learned the
importance of working with
nature by limiting use of
radiation and chemotherapy so
as to allow the patient’s own
immunological system to con
tinue to combat the disease.
Emphasizing the need for early
detection and treatment of
cancer, Dr. Junker recounted in
graphic terms how delay in
diagnosis complicates the sur
geon’s problems and reduces the
probability of cure.
