E. Sassoon William Edward Sassoon, 83, Pacolet Valley, died unexpec- tantly Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Sassoon was a citizen of Great Britain and had lived here since 1940. He came in the Spring of 1939 with his wife and two children, from Paris, France, to visit America and to see the World’s Fair. After spending the summer in Canada, and on their way back to New York, World War II broke out. Unable to return they spent the winter in Florida. He worked for British War Relief, for two years. With a group of men he knitted on a machine, hundreds of pairs of knee length wool socks, that were shipped to Britain, for sailors on trawlers. On America’s entry in the war he joined the Ration Board, for the duration of the war. Mr. Sassoon worked for the CflBHnued On-Baek^age Ambulance Fund Tops $14,000 The fund drive for a new ambulance for Landrum Rescue Squad now stands at $14,266.40, according to Jim Hardin, president of Landrum Ruritan Club, sponsors of the drive. Based upon the prospects of collecting the entire amount needed, the Ruritan Club suggested that the Rescue Squad place an order immediately in order to hedge an increase in price. “A Superior” Ambulance was ordered, and it will cost $18,747.00. This vehicle will replace one now in use, but will not be acceptable to Federal Government standards after June 30 of this year. However, certain pieces of equipment on it will be acceptable, and will be transferred to the new vehicle. Additional equipment, required by law, will cost $2,595. This will make the new vehicle cost a total of $21,342.00. With the $14,266.40 now collected there is yet $7,075.60 to be raised. The Ruritan Club’s drive ends March 24. A report from the drive committee indicates a portion of the balance needed has been pledge, but has not been turned in. The Ruritan Club has enlisted several other clubs and groups to assist in the solicitation. Some have reported they have not completed soliciting their assign ed territory.
