Mrs. Donald L. Stone
On Tuesday. March 18 at 7:30
p.m. the Polk County Unit of the
American Cancer Society will
have a board of directors meeting
at St. Luke’s Hospital. Featured
speaker will be an officer of the
American Cancer Society in
Raleigh, Mrs. Donald S. Stone,
Executive Vice-President of the
North Carolina Division.
A graduate of Florida State
College with a B.S. in Education
Mrs. Stone has had extensive
experience in personnel manage
ment, industrial relations,
health, education and life-saving.
Before coming to North Carolina
in 1955, she served as Director of
the Safety Services for the
Greater Cleveland Chapter of the
American Red Cross, and for five
years as Executive Director of
the San Diego Unit of the
American Cancer Society. A
noted swimmer and training
coach, Mrs. Stone counts among
her many honors and awards her
stint as honorary Sergeant in the
U. S." Marine Corps Amphibian
Tank Detachment, specializing in
swimming, lifesaving and ware-
fare aquatics training. She holds
eleven national awards for varied
service and educational pro
grams, and is the author of
several publications important to
the work of the American Cancer
Society. She is listed in “Who’s

Kiwanians To Hear
About Polk
Foundation
The Tryon Kiwanis Club will
meet Tuesday -at 1 p.m. at the
Pacolet River Plantation. John
G. Landrum, Jr. and Paul
Culberson will be the guest
speakers. They will tell of the
origin of the Polk County
Community Foundation and its
accomplishments to date will be
given.
Mr. Landrum is chairman of
the Foundation and Mr. Culber
son is the Executive Director.
The Foundation receives money
from members of the Community
as gifts, administers the funds
and makes distribution to
Community activities. The Foun
dation itself is not engaged in any
community activity.
The program will include slides
illustrating the activities sup
ported by these funds.

program.
AARP To Meet
The monthly meeting of NRTA-
AARP will be held at 2 p.m.
Tuesday, March 18, at the
Meeting Place.
After the business meeting a
program on “Health Care for the
Elderly” will be presented by Dr.
George Hartman. Ed Komant is
in charge of the program.
All visitors are welcome.
Refreshments will be served
after the meeting.
Benefit Bridge
The annual Daffy-Jills Garden
Club Benefit Bridge Party will be
held Saturday, March 22nd at 1
p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the
members’ homes. Individual
table prizes as well as a grand
prize will be given.

Harvey Blackwell
Harvey Blackwell, 81, husband
of Maude Hensley Blackwell,
R.F.D. No. 1, Mill Spring, died
Thursday at 11:55 p.m. at White
Oak Terrace in Tryon after an
extended illness.
A native of Polk County he was
a son of the late Wells and Celia
Horton Blackwell. He was a
retired farmer and member of
the Pea Ridge Baptist Church.
Surviving beside his wife are
one daughter, Mrs. Grace
Underwood of Tryon; one sister,
Mrs. Minnie Bailey of Forest
City, N. C.; one brother, Winfield
Blackwell of Mill Spring, N. C.;
two grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3
p.m. Saturday at the Pea Ridge
Baptist Church with the Rev.
Steve Hardin and Rev. William C.
Hollifield officiating.
Burial was in Mill Spring
Baptist Church Cemetery.
McFarland Funeral Chapel
was in charge of arrangements.
VNA Board Meeting
The Visiting Nurse Association
met on March 13 in the
conference room of NCNB. Mrs.
Henry Coward, chairman, pre
sided.
Mrs. Whitmire reported that
118 patient visits were made in
the month of January and 105
visits in February "with a total
mileage for the two months of
1498.
Gifts were acknowledged in
memory of Ralph Tucker and
Clark Kizzia.
Plans were discussed for the
VNA booth at the Polk County
Health Fair to be held at the 4-H
Building in Columbus on Friday,
April 25.
