Most of the nation’s biggest banks joined in the move to a record 19 percent prime lending rate Wednesday, as business borrowing costs jumped for the eighth time in the past month. Virginia defeated Minnesota 58-55 to win the National Invitational Basketball Tourna ment in New York Wednesday night. Virginia’s 7’4” freshman Ralph Sampson was voted the Most Valuable Player. The Pacolet River Plantation suffered some fire damage and a great deal of smoke damage Thursday morning. It is the meeting place for the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions Clubs. TODAY the Rotary Club will meet at The Dinner Bell and Tuesday the Kiwanis Club will meet at The Dinner Bell. Both meetings are at 12:45 p.m. The Democratic Women are holding a rally tonight at 7:30 at the courthouse. Saturday at 10 a.m. the youngsters in Green Creek will sign up for T Ball and Little League at the Green Creek Community Building. Saturday from 10a.m. to 3 p.m. Continued On Back Page Funfest Saturday The 1980 Polk Co. 4-H Funfest Talent Show and Fashion Revue will be held tomorrow night March 22 at the Fine Arts Center in Tryon beginning at 8:00. There is no admission charge, however, donations to defray expenses will be appreciated. The program will begin with the twenty-one acts competing in the talent show. The performers range in age from five to eighteen and represent each school in the county. Acts range from solos and piano, to gymnastics and tap dance; from clogging and 'pantomine to comedy skits and 'chorus. While the judges select the winners, the 4-H fashion revue will be staged, with 4-H’ers modeling the garments they have made themselves. The talent director this year is Claude Graves, who has a host of volunteers working behind .the scenes on lighting, sound, etc. Betsy Milsteen is directing the fashion revue. Mrs. Jackie Henson, Home Economics Ext. Agent, and Doug Roach, 4-H agent invite the public to attend and support the 4-H Youth Program. SINGING SATURDAY The Blue Ridge Free Will Baptist Church will have a singing Saturday night at 7:00 at the church on Rt. 2, Landrum. Featured singers will be the Liberty Boys and Elaine ClonU from Catawba, N. C. Rev. Robert Price, pastor, invites everyone to attend. "Oh wad some power the giftie gie ue To see oursels as others see us!” Our streets and highways are indeed a disgrace but hopefully by March 29th with "Operation Pride” some of this litter will be removed by many of our caring and concerned citizens and the men of the Polk County Highway Department. The so-called "Bottle Bill” which has been passed and put into effect in both Oregon and Maine, has been killed in committee in North Carolina (and 29 other states). This bill calls for a deposit on all cans and bottles which is refundable upon return of the empties. There is no question that the passage of such a bill would cut down on the amount of litter on our roadsides. A deluge of letters to our North Carolina legislators from con- Continued On Back Page Fire At Pacolet River Plantation The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to the Pacolet River Plantation Thurs day morning where fire did considerable damage in the kitchen and the rest of the building had smoke damage. Miss Catherine Hageman said that she was in and out of the building and believed that the fire was caused by an electrical shortage. She stated that there was fire damage in the kitchen but most of the other damage was from the smoke. She said that Pacolet River Plantation would be closed untU the necessary clean-up and repairs could be made.
