“Three Planets in Leo”

During Spring and early
Summer three bright naked-eye
planets can be seen in the same
constellation in the evening sky.
These planets are Jupiter, Saturn
and Mars and they are all in the
constellation of Leo. Jupiter and
Saturn will remain in relatively
the same positions in Leo over the
next few months but since Mars
is closer to the sun it will move
more rapidly among the stars of
Leo. The star maps accompany
ing this article show the positions
of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn on
April 1st and July 1st. Note how
far Mars moves over the period
of three months.
At the beginning of April the
three planets will be low in the
east at sunset. By mid-May they
will be almost straight up at
sunset. At sunset on July 1st,
Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be
low in the west.
Here is a list of some of the
special events that will take place
with Mars, Jupiter and Saturn
over the next few months:
APRIL 26: This morning at 1
a.m. the moon will pass a third of
a degree south of Saturn. The
moon and Saturn will be low in
the west.
MAY 3: At midnight tonight
Mars will pass less than a degree
north of Jupiter. At the time of
closest approach Mars and
Jupiter will be low in the west
MAY 22: At 12:30 a.m. this
morning Mars will be about a half
a degree north of the moon. The
moon and Mars will be low in the
west.
JUNE 10: This evening after
sunset the moon will be about a
degree north of Saturn. Saturn
and the moon will be high in the
west at sunset.
JUNE 25: Today Mars will pass
1 7 degrees south of Saturn. After
sunset tonight Mars will still be
within 2 decrees of Saturn. Look
for Mars and Saturn low in the
west.
