A floating “hotel” platform with more than 200 North Sea oilfield workers aboard capsized Thursday night and rescurers battled gale-force winds in the darkness to pull men from the towering, frigid waters. A plunge in the price of silver touched off frenzied activity in the nation’s financial and commodities market Thursday as silver futures for delivery in April plunged to $10.80 an ounce down $5 from Wednesday. Only two months ago the metal stood at an all-time high of about $50. North Carolina State Univer sity named Jim Valvano of Iona College as its new basketball coach. Mount St. Helens in- Washington erupted Thursday after a week of earthquakes warned of its new life, spewing smoke and ash and oozing lava. Mount St. Helen last erupted in 1857. Maroney, an ITT Rayonier vice president has retired after more than 45 years in the wood-preserving industry, it was announced by Charles E. Anderson, chairman and chief executive officer of the Stamford, Conn, based company “Bill Maroney set the founda tion for our largest regional operation (Southeast) and that contribution will be with us for a long lime”, said Anderson. Nearly all Maroney’s career was in South Carolina except for the nearly three years he served as vice president and general manager of Rayonier’s Southeast operations based in Atlanta, Georgia, and a six-year- period as eastern sales manager in New York City for Taylor-Colquitt Company. Maroney, previously president and chief operating officer of Rayonier’s subsidiary Southern Wood Piedmont Company, head- quartered in Spartanburg, be came a vice president of Rayonier in 1977. At Rayonier he was responsible for all company operations in the Southeast including timber, pulp, treated wood and lumber. Jeff Miller scattered 8 hits and also got 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the Patriots to their third straight win. Miller’s hits were a double and a triple.
