as silver futures for delivery in
April plunged to $10.80 an ounce
down $5 from Wednesday. Only
two months ago the metal stood
at an all-time high of about $50.

Maroney Retires
SPARTANBURG, S. C. -
William J. Maroney, an ITT
Rayonier vice president has
retired after more than 45 years
in the wood-preserving industry,
it was announced by Charles E.
Anderson, chairman and chief
executive officer of the Stamford,
Conn, based company
“Bill Maroney set the founda
tion for our largest regional
operation (Southeast) and that
contribution will be with us for a
long lime”, said Anderson.
Nearly all Maroney’s career
was in South Carolina except for
the nearly three years he served
as vice president and general
manager of Rayonier’s Southeast
operations based in Atlanta,
Georgia, and a six-year- period
as eastern sales manager in New
York City for Taylor-Colquitt
Company.
Maroney, previously president
and chief operating officer of
Rayonier’s subsidiary Southern
Wood Piedmont Company, head-
quartered in Spartanburg, be
came a vice president of
Rayonier in 1977. At Rayonier he
was responsible for all company
operations in the Southeast
including timber, pulp, treated
wood and lumber.
Maroney’s career in the wood
preserving industry reflected his
belief that "there is no substitute
for hard work.” He served as
president of five different wood
preserving companies: Pied

The Mountain Chapter of
Carolinas PGA is holding the first
annual Press Day on Monday,
April 7th, sponsored by profes
sionals of the Chapter, Lou
Hoskyns and Marc Brady of Red
Fox Country Club will host the
event.
A fun day is planned which
includes 18 holes of golf, food and
refreshments. Starting times will
be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sport writers, TV and radio
broadcasters have been invited to
participate in the event.

defeated the Rosman Tigers 16-6
Thursday afternoon at Rosman.
Jeff Miller scattered 8 hits and
also got 2 for 4 at the plate to lead
the Patriots to their third straight
win. Miller’s hits were a double
and a triple. Mark Skipper added
a home run as he went 2 for 5.
Polk Central is now 3-0 overall
and 2-0 in conference play.
